Following the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the royal family is forced into exile in a huge poverty, being received in Madeira in 1921, where Carlos, his baptismal name Karl Franz Josef Ludwig Hubert Georg Maria von Habsburg-Lothringen , the last Emperor of Austria, King of Hungary and Bohemia, between 1916 and 1918, passed away young, with the age of 30 years.

Deeply religious and committed in their duties as monarch, Charles I was beatified in 2004 by Pope John Paul II.

The Emperor is buried in the Church of Our Lady of Mount.
